It has been used since prehistoric times, with evidence of its use in cave paintings dating back thousands of years.

In watercolor, bone black offers a granulating effect, adding texture to washes. Unlike many synthetic blacks, Bone Black has a subtle warmth that harmonizes well with earth tones.
